Winter, Such As It Is, Is Coming

I am not slipping into dementia. I know that it’s early September, and by any reckoning Houston can expect another 7 or 8 weeks of brutal heat. There will be at least one more massive light bill. Hurricanes are still a threat.

But all that aside, I can feel winter coming on.

It started a couple of weeks ago. A late-day storm caused a little drop in temperature, just enough to make the evening downright pleasant. It was a welcome change to a long, hot dry spell, even though I knew it wouldn’t last the night. Still, it sensitized me to the onset of winter. I’ve felt it in the wind several times since. It’s definitely on its way.

I’ve begun to fantasize about pots of chili, and being able to turn on my oven in the afternoon. Brrrr!

The days are rapidly growing shorter, too. Darkness creeps in, and the pets and I huddle closer by the warmth of the hearth (okay, the large screen TV). Soon, I’ll be putting afghans on the bed and shuffling about the house in thick socks.

Sounds good to me. I think I’ll go buy some chili meat.
