One of my current guilty pleasures is the FX channel’s series FEUD. It dramatizes the antagonism between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford during and after the filming of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.
Jessica Lange does a passable Crawford; Davis could only be played by Susan Sarandon. Both struggle to maintain a steady command of their voice, but Sarandon seems to hit all the bitter-funny notes just right.
I loved the originals, and I’m loving their proxies. The behind-the-scenes is fun, too, since I’m a big fan of the film. As of this writing, they are moving into the filming of Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte. I have to admit I was unaware that Crawford was originally cast in that film. I’m eager to see how and when that changes.
